The American Foundry Society, the University of Northern Iowa and the National Industrial Sand Association are now investigating the establishment of a multiple institution research consortium to coordinate new research efforts toward producing sand castings with improved dimensional accuracy and repeatability. More can be found at http://www.afsinc.org/content/view/782/192/
If you are interested in participating in this consortium, contact Scott Lammers, AFS technical director, at 800/537-4237 x 228 or slammers@afsinc.org
We at Clinkenbeard have been producing for years rapid sand castings with the same properties as production components http://www.clinkenbeard.com/rapid-sand-castings/
Also, there’s a very good article in PDF form titled, “Investigation into the Technical Limitations of Silica Sand Due to Thermal Expansion,” is available at the AFS’s website at http://www.afsinc.org/images/Technical/20072646a.pdf
